An Iola man has died after drowning Saturday evening in a rain-swollen creek.
Allen County Undersheriff Jerry Daniels said it happened around 5 p.m. Saturday evening on Elm Creek, south of Iola. The undersheriff says the man and his friends were on inner tubes, floating down the creek which was swollen due to recent rains.
The man and his friends went over a dam. The two friends were able to make it to shore, but 23-year-old Zane Forbis-Burgardt was nowhere to be found.
Allen County deputies, Iola Police, firefighters, state troopers and officers from the Department of Wildlife and Parks were called to the scene to try to locate Forbis-Burgardt, An airplane was also brought in to search from the air.
By 9 a.m. Sunday morning, the water had receded and the body of Forbis Burgardt was recovered.
