Wichita police say a 25-year-old man died while trying to steal copper on the city's south side.
A passerby called 911 after finding the man's body around 2 p.m., in the 2200 block of South Minnesota, in the northwest corner of I-135 and Pawnee.
The man's bicycle was found leaning against a utility pole along with a flashlight and bolt cutters, said Wichita Police Lt. Dennis Wilson.
Police believe the man was electrocuted sometime overnight by coming into contact with a live, 7,200-volt line while attempting to steal copper.
Westar Energy warned of this danger after 31 substations were damaged from copper thefts in April.
"This is really the incident that we've been worried about that was going to happen," said Nick Bundy, spokesperson for Westar. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims family, certainly, but I hope that others will pay attention and heed this warning."
The man's name has not been released.
