A Kansas woman was killed in an accident in Greenwood County. Kansas Highway Patrol officials say it happened just before 4:30 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 400 about 1.5 miles east of Beaumont.
Investigators say the driver of a Dodge Magnum tried to pass a tractor trailer on U.S. 400 at the same time the truck driver started to pass a third vehicle on the eastbound lane of the highway. While trying to avoid hitting the tractor trailer, the driver of the Dodge went into the oncoming lane of traffic.
The driver of a Ford Taurus heading westbound swerved into a ditch to avoid hitting the Dodge but couldn't get out of the way in time. The two cars collided and the westbound car rolled.
Officials say the driver of the Ford, Tracie Leonard, 26, of Howard, was killed. Her 15-year-old passenger was hurt and transported to a nearby hospital.
The 19-year-old driver of the Dodge was not hurt but his two passengers, both 19, were both hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor trailer was not hurt.
The accident is under investigation.
