Wichita police are investigating after a Wichita family says they were scammed out of more than $1,000 in fundraising money for their daughter.
Christine Hebert and her daughter, 10-year-old Lilli, say they are heartbroken after learning the money raised for a special camp is missing.
Lilli has been diagnosed with Junior Rheumatoid Arthritis. She was granted a scholarship to a national conference in Anaheim, California but her family didn't have the money to go. About three weeks ago, Lilli's friend decided to have a lemonade stand to raise money for the Heberts' trip.
Lilli's friend and her mother, Amy Lawson, raised around $1,300 for the trip through the lemonade stand and fundraising on-line, but the money didn't get to the Heberts in time to leave for the trip. They had been planning to drive, and needed to leave yesterday to arrive in time for the conference that begins tomorrow.
Lawson says her daughter accidentally lost the cash from the stand, and she didn't realize it would take so long for the check from the on-line fundraiser to be sent to the Hebert family.
The Heberts say if they ever get the money, they will donate it to the Arthritis Foundation.
