UPDATE: Friday, June 08, 2012
A Wichita Police officer sustained minor injuries after a shooting while responding to a robbery call.
Authorities were called to the scene at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant, 1251 S. Woodlawn, around 7:25 p.m. Officers spotted the suspects’ car, and tried to stop the vehicle near Bailey and Woodlawn.
Chief Norman Williams, Wichita Police, said at least one suspect opened fire on the officers, striking the police car. The officer was injured after one of the bullets shattered window glass.
“This was a violent assault on two of our officers,” Williams said. “We are fortunate that neither officer was seriously injured or killed.”
The suspects drove away from the scene after firing three shots. The vehicle was later found in the 7000 block of E. Lincoln.
Officers quickly arrested a 55-year-old man, armed with a handgun. The second suspect, a 49-year-old male, was apprehended in the 1200 block of S. Terrace. Both were booked into the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on attempted murder and aggravated robbery charges.
Authorities are not searching for additional suspects.
The case will be turned over the District Attorney’s office for review.
Both officers have been placed on administrative leave per department policy.
