Deputy Among Several Injured In I-70 Crashes

A Geary County sheriff’s deputy and several others were hospitalized on New Year’s Eve following two accidents on Interstate 70 in snowy conditions.

The accidents happened between 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Interstate 70 about three miles west of Junction City.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says Geary County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Rickenbrode, 45, was stopped in the right lane of I-70 in his patrol car with his lights on when a Chevy passenger car struck the back of his vehicle.

Rickenbrode was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The deputy said that he was working another accident when he was hit by the Chevy.

The driver of the Chevy, Nancy Meade, 59, and her passenger, Altha Brewster, 82, we also taken to a hospital for treatment. Both are from Abilene.

In the wreck the deputy had been working, a Ford SUV was westbound on I-70 and lost control on the ice and entered the north ditch. It drove up an embankment and rolled back onto the roadway, coming to rest on its wheels.

The driver, Sandra Soto, 37, and several passengers were taken to Geary Community Hospital with possible injuries.

The passengers included Jose Hernandez, 38; Ariadne Hernandez, 14; and Viridiana Soto, 25. Another passenger, Alvaro Soto, 6, was taken to the hospital with disabling injuries, reports state. All are from Goodland.
