Eight cars were destroyed and up to seven others damaged after a carport at a southeast Wichita apartment complex caught fire late Friday night.
Crews were called just before 11 p.m. to the Parke East complex in the 1000 block of South Woodlawn. When they arrived on scene, they found the carport and the cars under it engulfed in flames, said Battalion Chief Sid Newby.
People who live in a nearby building were evacuated after the fire spread, causing damage to a deck, breaking several windows and melting siding. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from getting inside any of the apartments.
"We called several more units to give us some additional manpower and water supply to get the cars extinguished and check for any additional exposures or fire extension into the apartments," Newby said.
Residents were allowed back in after the fire was put out. No injuries were reported.
Neighbors tell KAKE News they saw smoke coming from a dumpster. The fire then grew and spread to the carport, they said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and a damage estimate has yet to be determined.
