WICHITA, Kan. — Police are investigating after a baby was found in the closet of an empty apartment in north Wichita.

Police were called to the Twin Rivers Apartments, located in the 2300 block of North Somerset, around 11:15. Residents of that apartment unit had previously called maintenance because their air conditioner wasn't working. When maintenance workers arrived shortly after 11, no one was home. Then they found a baby boy crying in a closet.

When the two employees found the baby, it was 90 degrees in the apartment. They told officers the boy was hot and thirsty. They gave him something to drink and changed his wet diaper.

Lt. Alan Prince said the child's 18-year-old mother came home shortly after officers arrived. She told police she had been leaving the baby alone for 30 minutes at a time for several months while she takes her 19-year-old husband to work. She told officers she didn't think she was doing anything wrong.

Police say that a grandmother is taking the child while social workers work with the mother.
