Wichita may soon be getting another low fare airline, and this one will be headed to places west. The city and Frontier Airlines are working out the terms of an agreement.
A city spokesperson says Frontier Airlines wants to serve Wichita. When KAKE News contacted the airline, their spokesperson would only say no agreement has been reached.
But travelers say they would like to see another low fare airline come to Wichita. Wichita resident and frequent traveler Tisha Hoover was very happy to hear that Frontier may soon serve the Wichita market. She's been flying AirTran because of the great deals the airline offers.
Tisha says, "To go out west would be really nice, we don't have a low airfare that goes that way. I really, really hope we get that."
AirTran's success is the reason Frontier Airlines is looking to come to Wichita to provide service to Denver. City spokesperson Mike Taylor says negotiating teams from both sides have been meeting to try to come up with an agreement.
Taylor says, "We're now down to the task to try and put that into words on paper that our lawyers and their lawyers can sign off on and then we can take it to the city council."
The details that have to be worked out include how many flights, where Frontier would fly, and marketing strategies. Taylor says if all goes well, we will have an announcement if not service, by the fall.
Taylor says, "It's possible and we remain optimistic that people will be catching those low fare flights to Denver."
Taylor says when AirTran came into the market there was a 60 percent to 70 percent decrease in all fares. So this is definitely some good news for travelers looking for cheaper flights out west.
