It's being called good news for Boeing and for Wichita. On Tuesday Air Tran confirmed an order to buy 100 737s. The deal is the largest placed by a domestic carrier this year, and could be worth six billion to Boeing.
Boeing Wichita workers build most of the fuselage for the 737. The orders will firm up employment, but it won't necessarily mean new jobs. "These airplanes have already been placed into the production mix. They were figured into the mix already," said Boeing spokesman Dick Zeigler.
AirTran eyed the 737 model because it flies longer and farther than its current fleet of 717s. AirTran also placed an order to ten more 717s.
The first aircraft delivery is scheduled for next summer.
