Family of Murdered Teen Speaks Out
June 17 - The family of a slain teenager vows to pursue just punishment for the death of their daughter and her unborn baby. Terri Brooks is the mother of Chelsea Ann Brooks. She spoke briefly to reporters Saturday evening in front of Allison Middle School, where Chelsea had been a student. She thanked those who assisted with the search.
On Friday, police identified a body found this week in a Butler County field as that of the 14-year-old girl. She had been missing for nearly a week. Her due date was July fourth. The family had named the baby Alexa Lynn.
Police had initially thought the girl was a runaway and had not suspected foul play until the body was found. They now have a 17-year-old suspect in custody.
Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston says Kansas courts cannot charge as murder the death of a fetus. But the state
does have a law on the books regarding injury to a pregnant woman. She says that would be trumped by any homicide charges that could be filed.
