A judge has ordered a competency hearing for a McPherson mother who allegedly abandoned her baby, leaving the infant in a trash dumpster.

Eighteen-year-old Deidre Harman waived her right to a preliminary hearing last month after pleading not guilty to one count of child abandonment.

Police say she reported that her infant had been kidnapped. Officers later found the baby in a nearby trash bin.

Attorneys asked that she be examined by a psychiatrist to determine whether she is competent to stand trial. The judge agreed.
