March 17 - A man accused of abuse learns his fate. Rodney Wilson was convicted in what prosecutors call the worst case of child abuse in Reno County history.
At his sentencing hearing Friday, Wilson's son spoke out on his father's behalf. The boy told the court that he loves his father very much and has forgiven him. Wilson's son told the judge his father should get probation, not prison time.
Wilson was found guilty of abusing two of his children for seven years. The 12-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were locked in small rooms for hours every day. The windows were boarded shut and the children had no bedding, only a mattress to sleep on. They were given a coffee can to use as a bathroom and deprived of food to the point of semi-starvation.
The state says the father and stepmother put the children in the rooms as punishment. Wilson says he only tried to do the right thing. In court, Wilson told his children he hopes they can find the strength to forgive him.
The judge says while Wilson's children may be able to forgive him for his horrific acts, he must take responsibility for his actions. Wilson was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison. The children's stepmother will stand trial next month.
