Small Tornado Touches Down in Newton

January 28 - A tiny tornado touches down in Newton and leaves behind tens of thousand of dollars in damage. The damage was actually caused by what meteorologists call a landspout.

It started off as an ordinary Saturday afternoon at Conklin Cars, but then the winds suddenly changed. Witnesses saw what looked like a tornado tear through the dealership.

The landspout started southwest of Conklin on the east side of Newton. It then moved it's way northeast where it eventually disappeared, but not before causing a lot of damage. Windows in about 50 cars were shattered. The strong winds knocked over a light pole and broke several windows inside the building. A nearby home also suffered some damage. Despite the heavy damage, no one was hurt.

A landspout is a spinning column of air that usually is not associated with a rotating thunderstorm. The one that hit Saturday was on the ground for about four miles. Its path was approximately 50 yards wide and wind speeds were just under 70 miles per hour.
