The Roman Catholic archbishop for northeast Kansas says Gov. Kathleen Sebelius should refrain from taking Communion.

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann, of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, said Sebelius shouldn't participate in the sacrament until she repudiates her past support for abortion rights. Naumann made his statements in a column for Friday's edition of the archdiocese's newspaper, The Leaven.

He said Sebelius' actions sent a "spiritually lethal message." He cited her recent veto of a bill imposing new restrictions on abortion providers. Sebelius is Catholic but a consistent supporter of abortion rights.

Spokeswoman Nicole Corcoran said the governor hasn't seen the column.

Someone needs to tell the bishop that it isn't what he wants that makes him fat, it's what he gets.

Posted by: cliff Location: wichita on May 13, 2008 at 12:10 PM
actually "seperation of church and state" has degenerated from the govt. not creating a church to all things chritian are bad. a lot of founding fathers turnjing over in their graves over that one.

Posted by: cliff Location: wichita on May 12, 2008 at 01:39 PM
Chris, seperation of church and state is suppoed to be " state dont tell church what to do, church dont tell state what to do."

Posted by: Chris Location: Wichita on May 12, 2008 at 10:17 AM
Wow Cliff....I think this might be the first time I agree with you. There are Catholics who do get abortions and who support it let's say Sebelius for instance. To agnostic...this has nothing to do with seperation of church and state. You guys always seem to confuse the two.

The Catholic church needs to stay out of people's personal business. When they have to pay taxes like everyone else instead of living off the people who do attend their church, then they may have the right to tell everyone else what to do. I'll be more than glad to let them pay my bills and taxes and let them tell me what to do when they support me and my family. IN THE MEAN TIME THEY CAN JUST BUT OUT! And I'm sure that I'm not the only one to feel this way. I no longer go to church as I got tired of hearing them preach about money and telling people about the wrong they are doing when the majority of them are doing worse than any of us thought about doing. I'm not a Sebelius supporter but I just have to say to the bishop-GET OFF HER BACK AND CLEAN UP YOUR OWN BACKYARD!!

The Church needs to remember its (tax free) place in society. Sebelius' job is to uphold the Constitution, not the dictates of the Catholic Church. Shame on the Church for trying to violate the seperation between church and state and bully Sebelius into changing her political standpoints because they consider them "unholy".

How many catholics have been to tillers office? clean your own house first. get your own to stop getting abortions.

Posted by: Chris Location: Wichita on May 11, 2008 at 04:42 PM
The Catholic Church has acknowledged and paid for the sexual crimes against children. This is NOT exclusive to the Catholic Church and most priests are good, decent human beings. I absolutely agree with the Archbishop. Sebelius has allowed tiller and other abortionists to continue their murderous crimes against children. I am not being brainwashed by the Catholic Church and don't attend church on a regular basis. I consider myself a human rights activist. I bet most of you all who condem the Archbishop disagree with the death penality and the war in Iraq but are ok with taking the lives of innocent children, and you all have the nerve to call Catholics hypocritical?!!!!!!!!!!

Greenbriar-you've got that right!

Posted by: Greenbriar Location: Wichita on May 10, 2008 at 07:49 PM
Gov Sebelius is AWESOME and the catholic church has some nerve. The biggest concentration of pedophiles telling an awesome governer to do something HA

Posted by: Anonymous on May 10, 2008 at 06:47 PM
Sounds like Heather has been brainwashed by the Catholic church. You know what they say "everyone is entitled to their opinion". Sounds like she thinks that the only one that counts is hers. I don't approve of abortion either but then I'm not the one who is going to have to answer for it. So you know the old saying "LIVE AND LET LIVE" and don't worry about anyone but yourself.

I totally agree with Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann! First of all, this isn't a contest of who's "better" than who. It is a matter of "life and death". Just as Catholics support natural life, we also support spiritual life. I really hope that Governor Sebelius and people like her will come to understand the doctrine of the Church and open their eyes to realize that taking the Eucharist with an unclean soul is worse than just having an unclean soul, because that causes sacrilege! What we as Catholics need to do is pray for these people who are confused and mistaken, not only Gov. Sebelius, but those who have posted all these UNEDUCATED comments.

So they want Sebelius to refrain from taking communion. How come they haven't stopped the priest who have molested children from continuing to say mass and having contact with children? ISN'T THIS A LITTLE LIKE THE POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK? WHAT HYPOCRISY!

Posted by: Hal on May 10, 2008 at 10:19 AM
I couldn't have said it bette myself. Like another anonymous said "CLEAN UP YOUR OWN BACKYARD BEFORE TRYING TO DO SO OF ANYONE ELSES!

Posted by: C Location: Wichita on May 10, 2008 at 10:08 AM
I AGREE with the Bishop!

Posted by: melanie Location: wichita on May 10, 2008 at 07:58 AM
Exactly why when I entered adulthood I quit the Catholic church. A pedophile preist can still take communion. Too many man made rules. Jesus died for ALL of our sins not a select few. I go to a christian church now and believe if Jesus walked the earth today, he would break bread with me.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 10, 2008 at 12:54 AM
Uhhh,Hello? I wonder if the Arch Bishop was as critical of the priests that were molesting children? Seems to me that he needs to make sure his own back yard is clean before pointing the finger at others. No I don't support abortion, I also don't support self rightous church leaders!

Posted by: anonymous on May 10, 2008 at 12:43 AM
The priest don't want abortion so they have a better chance of a date in 5 years.

I agree 100% with Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann. As a devout Catholic myself it is important to protect life from conception until natural death. Anything less or support of an abortion bill would be considered a sin by the Catholic faith. Gov. Sebelius is aware of the churches teachings and should not try to water them down for whatever politcal gain. The Catholic faith does not change for the world or for govenor Sebelius. It is what it is "the truth". The govenor, a pro-choice supporter, is considered to be in a state of mortal sin by the churches teachings and has fallen from God's grace by making such political decisions. In this state of mortal sin one is not permitted to receive the Body of Christ by church teachings. Govenor Sebelius is fully aware of these teachings just as Rudy Juliani of New York is also. Being a politcal figure does not elevate you above church teachings. It saddens me to keep hearing these politcal figures of todays times call themselves Catholics!

Doesn't Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann live in a country where he required to keep the state seperate from his religion. It is the law.

Posted by: James Location: w on May 9, 2008 at 09:15 PM
Is this all the church has to worry about? Maybe they should be more concerned about keeping the priests off young boys

Posted by: AJ Location: Wichita on May 9, 2008 at 07:08 PM
I'm not Catholic but belive in GOD and you can't be two faced and belive that abortion is nothing LESS than taking a life.

Posted by: All Location: Wichita on May 9, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Hypocrisy is found in all church's. They are every where! Mostly found in the Wichita area....lol

Posted by: Bryan Location: Wichita on May 9, 2008 at 05:25 PM
John 8:7 (King James Version) So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. I have not agreed with many of Gov. Sebelius's political opinions and stands. However it is not my place or anyone elses place to judge her in regards to taking communion. I am not free of sin and neither is Joseph F. Naumann.

Just because she is a catholic doesn't mean the entire state of Kansas is. Kudos to the Gov. She is in a position where she thinks of all creed/race & religions. This is absolutly rediculas she should be able to practice her religion regardless of what she veto's.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Wichita on May 9, 2008 at 03:43 PM
I believe that is what you call a hypocrite and I have found that the catholic church is full of them. They act so goody, goody and when you get right down to it they are worse than worse. I think that the church needs to clean up its own act before telling other people what to do.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 9, 2008 at 03:30 PM
Sebelius is just as bad as Fred Phelps

Posted by: Chad Location: Wichita on May 9, 2008 at 03:11 PM
Pretty bad when the Catholic's don't even want you.

Posted by: cliff Location: wichita on May 9, 2008 at 03:04 PM
I seem to remember " let thoe without sin cast the first stone" I guess that isnt in your bible, only hate and intolerance.

Posted by: Sherry Location: El Dorado on May 9, 2008 at 02:45 PM
All I have to say is, the more I hear and read about our Governor, the more I like and respect her!!

Posted by: Jake Location: wich on May 9, 2008 at 02:34 PM
She's a phony Catholic, so it doesn't make any difference to her. They call them cafeteria catholics. Pick and chose.
