The return of indoor soccer in the Wichita area will have a familiar ring. General Manager John Blazek confirms the name of the team will be the Wichita Wings2.
"You've got the Wichita Wild, now the Wichita Wings2, you've got baseball, you got hockey, you got WSU, but you have a lot of soccer fans in this community, and they're really excited for it to come back," said Blazek.
Owner Wink Hartman wanted the name of the team to be the Wings, when it was announced that he had purchased the rights to a Major Indoor Soccer League franchise.
A check of state public records shows Service Body Shop owner Blake Shumaker holds the rights to the name Wichita Wings. Shumaker came to an agreement with the team Wednesday to share the name.
As for the reason behind the '2' at the end of the name, and the new logo, Blazek says it's simple.
"We're not interested in the old orange Whataburger logo, this is a new Wings2 team. That's why Mr. Hartman named it at 2, the rebirth and coming back of the wings. He's also got 2 in a lot of his oil businesses. So, there's some meaning for the community for the Wichita Wings2," said Blazek.
Shumaker hopes to work with the team to form a partnership for local youth to play organized soccer and continue their interest in the sport and the Wichita Wings2.
"Excitement brings enthusiasm. Enthusiasm brings crowds, and I think we'll see lots of great things come down the road, once we start to name our head coach, our logo, and with some of the players coming in," said Blazek.
Blazek said the organization has held interviews for a head coaching position and hopes to have someone hired within the next few weeks. The new logo will be unveiled then.
