The Kansas Highway Patrol has released shocking video from a highway trooper's dash cam showing a terrifying close call with a semi truck.

The video was taken on the Kansas Turnpike, a few miles outside of Wellington. Although the crash happened in February, troopers say it's the perfect time of year for Kansas drivers to see it.

As more people are out on the road this holiday season Kansas Highway Patrol says there's a greater chance you're going to see troopers or other drivers pulled over on the side of the road. So they say now is a good time to remind everyone of just how important it is to move over and give them space.

Video from a Kansas Highway Patrol troopers dash cam, shows a semi truck side swiping the trooper's car as he's pulled over on the shoulder.

“You know but for the grace of God he could have died out there,” Captain Joe Bott said.

Captain Joe Bott says the truck driver fell asleep behind the wheel and drifted over the line.

"Well if the semi had been over just a few more inches, he would have shoved that patrol car up under the trailer or if it would have been a couple seconds later the trooper would have been out of the car and the truck would have hit him going 70 miles an hour standing out on the side of the road,” Captain Bott said.

Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away and Captain Bott says it's the busiest time of the year for highway troopers. So he's asking drivers to remember the law requires them to move over into the left lane if they see an emergency vehicle parked on the shoulder.

Also, he warns drivers to stay alert on long trips.

“I would caution people if you're feeling fatigued at all to stop at a rest area for a cup of coffee just to get yourself woke up, because it doesn't take but a second for something like that to happen,” Captain Bott said.

Captain Bott says the driver of the semi woke up after the crash and pulled over. He got several citations. The highway patrol trooper only had a few, minor injuries.
