A 26-year-old motorcyclist remains in critical condition at a local hospital after an accident in west Wichita Monday night.

Adan Lopez was traveling westbound on 37th Street North just west of Ridge Road when he did not merge and hit the curb, Lt. Kevin Vaughn of the Wichita Police Department said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and hit a tree. The impact knocked Lopez's helmet off.

The accident happened at about 9:43 p.m., around the same time a shooting and two house fires were being called in to 911 along with numerous complaints of fireworks being fired. The number of calls to 911 kept witnesses to the accident from being able to get through until the son of an off-duty police officer called his father, who used his police radio to contact dispatch.
