Parents, staff, and students of Woodland Elementary were grinning from ear to ear to hear they were off the list of school closures.

"This school is really amazing for our children. The educational programs here, with the health and wellness magnet part of it and that program, there's just nothing like it here in town, so it's a great feeling," said Renee Boydo, mother of a second grader at Woodland.

Boydo along with other parents rallied behind the school and got 1,100 signatures on a petition to keep the school from closing.

Staff said they were ready for the best and worst case scenarios.

"We decided right when we found out, the first time that we were on the list, that we were going to still be focused on students. That student achievement would be our focal point and we weren't going to allow this to keep us from being all that we could be," said Lichelle Alford, principal.

While Woodland was off the list, Emerson Magnet was added to the school closing list. They join Bryant, Mueller, and Lincoln elementaries. The schools were primarily chosen due to building conditions and capacity of schools versus population in the area.

"It's not an indictment of the building or community in any way. It's really more about how all those factors come into play and capacity is a huge issue," said Superintendent John Allison.

Although Woodland celebrated the win, staff said they understood the emotional roller coaster of being on and off the list.

"I do sympathize with those schools that are in that position still because it is difficult for the community. They're going to have the same experiences we had," said Alford.
