Wichita Police are dealing with a dramatic increase in counterfeit money cases. The WPD notes that in September and October this year, counterfeit currency cases have nearly quadrupled to 77 cases from the 20 cases reported in the same two months last year. Through November 18 this year, there have been 29 counterfeit currency reports compared to 18 for all of November, 2009.
The WPD, working with the United States Secret Service and area businesses, have taken steps to heighten awareness and train residents how to identify as well as report conterfeit money.
A training video to educate everyone on how to "Know Your Money" is available here
Everyone is encouraged to check the website for tips on spotting counterfeit bills. Brochures are also available at each of the police bureau stations.
If suspicious activity is observed or a counterfeit bill has been received, please immediately contact the Wichita Police Department by calling 911 or the United States Secret Service at 267-1452. Remember to avoid handling the note as much as possible and never put yourself in danger.
