WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Severe thunderstorms could affect parts of south-central Kansas on Saturday afternoon through the night. While there remains some uncertainty on how many severe storms could develop and what locations could be affected, the potential exists for higher-end severe weather such as large hail, damaging winds and even tornadoes.


10 p.m. - Evening storms left south-central Kansas counties with fallen trees, downed powerlines and outages. 

While most of the area is done with storms for the night, our far eastern area could still see some storms for up over the next couple of hours.


8:30 p.m. update: A 70 mph wind gust was reported at Eisenhower National Airport. A line of thunderstorms is moving north out of Sumner County. Heavy rainfall, small hail, and gusty winds up to 50 mph are possible.


7:30 pm. update: Tornado warnings have been issued for Barber and Harper Counties.


6:15 p.m. update: Several severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for parts of western Kansas.


5 p.m. update: Tornado Watch has been expanded north. The new watch goes until 1 a.m. Stay weather-aware through the remainder of the day!

Severe storms are possible during the afternoon and through the overnight across much of KAKEland. While there may not be a large number of storms on the radar this evening, those that do develop will pose a very large hail; threat, possibly over 3" in diameter, with wind gusts over 80mph and a few persistent tornadoes.


4 P.M. update: A Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS) Tornado WATCH has been issued for portions of south-central Kansas until 11 p.m. Saturday.

This is a special kind of tornado watch issued only when there’s unusually high confidence in the potential of multiple at least EF2-strength and long-lived tornadoes in the area, according to the National Weather Service.
