WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The Wichita Police Department said a shooting at a massage parlor in southeast Wichita Wednesday afternoon was the result of an attempted armed robbery.

Wednesday afternoon police responded to a shooting at Beijing Massage near Lincoln and George Washington Blvd. When they got there they found 44-year-old Robexy Figueroa dead with several gunshot wounds.

"At this preliminary stage, it is believed that the deceased male was attempting to commit an armed robbery of the business and there was an exchange of gunfire," said Capt. Aaron Moses.

He added the injured man is believed to be an employee.

In a statement, WPD said a 71-year-old employee stopped him. A fight between the two broke out and ended with shots being fired. The employee also shot several time, but he was taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

"It’s terrible if someone lost their life over money," said Diane Lett, who lives right down the street from the business.

She was planning on going to a nearby dollar store yesterday when she got a call from her sister.

"She’s, like, 'I’m glad you didn’t make it because there was a shooting down there.' I was, like, 'What" Oh my god what is this world coming to?'" she said, adding that she was upset in hearing this happened so close to her house.

Police said this is an ongoing investigation. WPD will present the facts to the district attorney at a later date.

KAKE News reached out to the business but has not heard back. Thursday afternoon the parking lot was empty and the building was closed.
