SALINE COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a crash in Salina on Friday.

The Salina Police Department says just after 12:30 a.m. Friday, a 2012 Jaguar driven by a 21-year-old woman was southbound on Belmont at a "high rate of speed." The driver tried to negotiate the curve but struck the west curb and hit an Evergy power pole on the southwest corner of Mayfair and Belmont.

The impact severed the power pole from its base in the ground, police say. The car then rotated and struck a tree.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was extricated from the car and transported to Salina Regional Health Center where she remains in critical condition, Salina police say.

Police are currently unsure if the passenger was wearing a seatbelt, but emergency responders found the driver with a seatbelt in place. The crash remains under investigation.
