WABUNSEE COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - A Kansas sheriff has opened up about the loss of his daughter-in-law to her battle with depression earlier this week.

Wabunsee County Sheriff Rob Hoskins said in a Facebook post on Thursday night that on Monday, he lost his daughter-in-law Kury Comer to her battle with depression and life's struggles which "she had battled for so long."

"I apologize for being slow in responding to this situation but my family and I have been trying to understand and cope with the situation that we found ourselves suddenly forced to face," Hoskins wrote.

The sheriff wrote the following, in a post addressed "to all of you:"

As many of you may or may not know on this past Monday my beautiful daughter-in-law Kury Comer lost the battle with depression and life's struggles which she had battled for so long. She left behind her husband and two beautiful children. Words cannot describe the loss that our family feels right now.
I apologize for being slow in responding to this situation but my family and I have been trying to understand and cope with the situation that we found ourselves suddenly forced to face. We have been dealing with so many thoughts and emotions that are and would be overwhelming if it were not for the support we have received from so many that it would be impossible for us to list and thank.

There are so many “whys?” that will never be answered in this lifetime and a void that will never be filled.

I am not a wise or very smart man but after living and serving as long as I have I know this: The sun is going to rise tomorrow and it will be a new day. Each and every one of us may have a past filled with hurts; bad decisions; pain; and disappointments. Each of us are given a new day and hopefully a tomorrow and they each start with a clean slate. We can dwell on the past and allow it to overtake and define us or we can embrace today and look to hope of the future. I choose the later.

All of us will face demons and struggles. If you find yourself in such a situation and are having a hard time and feeling lost and at an end please ask for help. Here in Wabaunsee County we have the services of Crosswinds Wellness and Counseling at 620-343-2211 or 800-279-3645. These are experienced and dedicated individuals that are there for you 24 hours a day. For those not living here that may be reading this page call or text 988 to speak with a trained professional that will find help for you where ever you may find yourself. You can always call the sheriff's office at 785-765-3323 and we will come. We care and we are there. You are not alone.

Lastly I want to thank my staff that have stepped up in my absence and have kept the mission of sheriff's office intact. Wabaunsee County has the finest group of individuals serving that has been my honor to work with in my 42 year career and 20 years of service in Wabaunsee County. No sheriff could ask for a better team. Thank you to those who have reached out on “Mealtrain” with your assistance to our family. The support and food has taken a burden away during this time. Honestly, I am not very active social media circles and did not know about this program ,it has been a great help. Thank you to all of our extended family; friends; prayer partners; and complete strangers that have shown us love and support---blessings to each and everyone of you.

Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

Rob Hoskins
Sheriff
