SHAWNEE COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday in Topeka.

Around 3:10 p.m., Topeka Police received a 911 call reporting that a suspect connected to an armed carjacking that occurred earlier in the day, was in the area of 16th and Harrison Street.

Preliminary information indicates that officers responded and observed the suspect, 34-year-old Terrell D. Hayes-Osby, fleeing on foot. Officers engaged in a foot pursuit heading west on 16th Street, across Topeka Boulevard. During the pursuit, Hayes-Osby fired in the direction of officers. Four officers returned fire, and Hayes-Osby was struck. The shooting occurred around 3:25 p.m. near 16th and Tyler.

Medical aid was rendered. EMS responded and transported Hayes-Osby to a local hospital. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

Hayes-Osby’s condition is serious, but he is expected to survive.

After the chase ended, Topeka Police requested that the KBI conduct an investigation.

The KBI is investigating the shooting. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the Shawnee County District Attorney for review.
