DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) - Two people and their pets are lucky to be alive after a house fire in Derby on Wednesday night.

The Derby Fire Marshall says just before 9:20 p.m. on Wednesday, neighbors reported fire engulfing the rear of a home in the 1200 block of Briarwood. Derby units arrived on the scene within three minutes and began to work to extinguish the fire.

Due to the fire being electrical, Evergy was called to cut the power to the home in order to work to get it extinguished.

The rear of the home had significant damage. The two residents and their two pets made it out safely, the Derby Fire Marshall said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
