WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Crews responded to an apartment fire at the Park Meadows Apartments on East Boston near Harry Street and Webb Road.

It happened around 2 a.m. on Monday morning. A neighbor living directly across from the fire said she saw what she thought were car lights shining directly in her window only to realize it was a fire.

"It was just flames, just flames so I grabbed my phone and called 911 when I got outside nobody was outside so apparently I was the only one to call 911. When I got outside I just started screaming for everybody to come out of their apartments," said an emotional Shawn.

Shawn said when she was walking toward her front door, she could smell smoke and when she opened the door, she could feel the intense heat.

She said the entire top floor was engulfed in flames and people were running for their lives with their dogs.

Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz said the fire was contained to the second floor.

"First floor I believe didn't have any type of damage from the fire itself; it does have water damage so the whole building itself is not going to be liveable," said Ocadiz.

Thanks to Shawn's call to 911, many lives may have been saved.

Neighbor, Latausha Fields, who lives to the left of the burned complex said, I normally sleep with like ocean waves on and so it makes me just wanna like make sure I can hear stuff. You know my room is right across from here and to not hear anything, or not smell anything or not know anything is a scary feeling as a mom."

Ocadiz said 11 people were evaluated and six went to Wesley Main Hospital for treatment.

The Wichita fire Department said the fire was started by an improperly disposed of cigarette.
