WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A shooting at an apartment complex near the intersection of Pawnee and Broadway killed a 19-year-old man Tuesday night.

Just after 9:30, 19-year-old Dontis Carter was shot multiple times outside of the River Walk Apartments in south Wichita. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Wednesday, family and friends honored his life.

Family gathered to light candles and release balloons into the sky, to honor the life of their son, brother, and friend. Dozens attended the vigil and prayer service, and those who knew him best remember him as a great father.

"I still haven't got over it," says Dontis' aunt Tanika Carter. "It's really hard for me and my family."

The family also pleaded for peace in the community.

"I just hate that he has to leave two kids behind. And it's just sad," says Dontis' sister Donesha. "I just wish people would just stop violence altogether."

Wichita police say Carter and the 19-year-old suspect, identified through case records as Damarqua Edwards, got into an argument before shots were fired.

Police took Edwards into custody on first-degree murder charges early Wednesday morning.
