McConnell AFB airman killed in Wichita motorcycle crash, base says
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - McConnell Air Force Base says an airman was killed in a motorcycle crash near the base over the weekend.
The base said in a release that 28-year-old Tech. Sgt. Erik Gajate was from Gilbert, Arizona. He died Sunday in a crash at 47th Street South and Woodlawn.
"Gajate trained crew chiefs for the KC-46A Pegasus and KC-135 Stratotanker as an instructor at the 373rd Training Squadron, Detachment 8, at McConnell. He arrived in 2015," McConnell AFB said.
A memorial service is scheduled for 9 a.m. April 4 at the on-base chapel.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said the motorcycle was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line and struck a Buick LaCrosse head-on.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says they are investigating after a motorcyclist died following a crash in south Wichita on Sunday.
Authorities say emergency personnel were dispatched to 47th and Woodlawn for a crash around 4:20 p.m. Deputies say a motorcycle was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed, crossed the center line and struck a Buick LaCrosse head-on. The motorcyclist, a 28-year-old man, died at the scene, and the driver of the car was uninjured. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, and there were no signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
The crash remains under investigation.
