WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - One resident at Emery Gardens is struggling with what he calls a major mold problem, and he says apartment management has done nothing to help.

On March 10th Joseph McDonald opened his closet and saw mold all along the walls. He says he reached out to the apartment management the day after but nothing has been done and it's still growing.

"They said that there's a list of maintenance requests for the whole complex and that they would get to my apartment eventually," he told KAKE News.

But a little over two weeks later he says it hasn't done anything and the problem is only getting worse.

"I know this is getting out of control. I just don't know what else to do," he said.

He explained that he lives with two teens and his parents and he's worried for their health having to live in an apartment full of mold. When you open the closet it's impossible to miss it. It's so bad, you can smell it.

"It's not safe. Like at any given time this could get extremely out of control and people could die," he said.

He adds the mold is only the latest problem he's had. He says his pipe has burst and the apartment has flooded before. His lease is up in August and he's ready to move his family out of Emery Gardens.

"I'm paying to live in something safe and secure and this isn't safe or secure," he said.

KAKE News is talking with a state lawmaker about what it would take to propose a bill giving tenants in Kansas more protections so they can avoid situations like this.

We have reached out to the apartment who did not initially respond.
