GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KAKE) - Officials say a Garden City man was seriously injured Friday night after being struck by a vehicle.

The Garden City Police Department says emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of N. Taylor Avenue and W. Kansas Avenue at 9:20 p.m. on Friday regarding a vehicle hitting a pedestrian. When officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with the pedestrian, identified as 39-year-old Nathanial Zapata.

Police say Zapata was walking across the nearby McDonald's parking lot when he did not utilize the pedestrian crosswalk and cut through the middle of the street. A vehicle driven by a 79-year-old Garden City man was traveling south on Taylor Avenue. The driver did not see Zapata as he crossed the street and struck him, police said.

Zapata was transported to the hospital and later flown to Wichita due to the extent of his injuries, the GCPD said. No other injuries were reported from the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
