BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - Authorities say that a shop in south-central Kansas has been declared a total loss after an early-morning fire started by welding.

The Barton County Sheriff's Office says at about 12:39 a.m. on Thursday, deputies responded to 487 SE. 80th Ave. for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 30 x 30 shop building completely engulfed in flames.

Initial investigation indicates welding activity was in progress in the building when sparks or slag ignited the insulation in the wall, the sheriff's office said. Witnesses stated the fire quickly spread and the four individuals in the shop were unable to bring it under control.

The department said the building was a total loss and there were no injuries.

The Ellinwood Fire Department brought the scene quickly under control, they were assisted by fire crews from the Great Bend Fire Department.
