MAIZE, Kan. (KAKE) - "Together We Freeze" was the theme for Saturday’s polar plunge put on by Special Olympics Kansas Athletes.

It is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year supporting 4500 Special Olympics Kansas Athletes.

"This is how we raise money for go to USA games, world games, and help us get more money we'll buy more equipment," said Special Olympic Athlete Tyler Griswold.

Teams were divided between the Wichita Police Department, Sedgwick County Fire Department and others.

The fundraiser started in 1981 with the support of just five officers.  Founder Richard Lanunyon said it is now worldwide and he is proud of the growth.

"No other entity in the world except law enforcement put this movement together and made it stand up not only in Wichita, not only in the state of Kansas but around the world," said Lanunyon.

He also said he is proud of what the organization stands for which gives the opportunity for inclusion with these athletes making them a part of the community.

Last year in Chicago at the international convention it was announced the organization has raised over 1 billion dollars worldwide.  He said the rookies who attended the event on Saturday will pick up the torch and carry it to the next billion.
