WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Just days after opening for the summer season, a public pool in south Wichita is closed due to what the city calls "significant vandalism."

The city said the vandalism at Aley Pool early Wednesday morning included the destruction of about 30 chairs by fire, the destruction of sun shades and more.

"(The fire) was intentionally set underneath these sunshades," said Troy Houtman, director of Wichita Parks and Recreation. "And we had some sunshades, six of them that were taken out, that were burned out, as well as about 30 chairs that were burned. So obviously, they used some kind of accelerant to start the fire."

The Wichita Fire Department said the fire caused $53,000 worth of damage. The pool, which is located at 1800 South Seneca, will be closed until the repairs are made.

"Our park and recreation amenities belong to us all, and senseless vandalism hurts our community and the children and families looking forward to a fun day of swimming," the city said in a tweet.

Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.
