Many applicants still waiting on assistance as LIEAP falls months behind
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Many people on the app Nextdoor have exchanged messages with the same question: Where are my LIEAP benefits?
One applicant says she's done several follow-up calls only to be told they're behind and short-staffed.
After running out of options, she called Evergy directly.
"I apologize, we are months behind and we are actually training some new people," is what Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) applicant, Angela O'Gorman, said she has been told since January.
O'Gorman along with many others applied for LIEAP assistance and has yet to receive updates on their status.
In a statement from LIEAP spokesperson, Michael Deines, they prioritize applicants facing disconnection or needing electricity for medical purposes. Deines said they face staffing issues because their employees are temporary and seasonal.
He added notification of their benefit is determined by their date of application. Deines also added they have hired eight additional staff members to process applications.
