SALINA, Kan. (KAKE) - The woman who was stabbed outside a Salina Walmart on Wednesday is likely to recover fully, police say.

They say that she underwent surgery and is recuperating. 

Police also say that they are requesting the following charges on Kenneth Harold Smith:

  • Attempted first-degree murder.
  • Criminal use of a weapon.
  • Aggravated weapons violation by a convicted felon.
  • Criminal carrying of a weapon.

Smith is currently being held on No Bond in the Saline County Jail.

A woman was stabbed outside a Salina Walmart on Wednesday and was rushed to the hospital.

The Salina Police Department said that shortly before noon they responded to the stabbing at the Walmart at 2900 S. 9th Street in Salina. Officers found a 26-year-old woman who had been stabbed in the back and rushed her to the hospital where she is currently being treated.

Police have arrested 71-year-old Kenneth Smith of Salina who was still at the scene. Authorities don't know why Smith allegedly stabbed the woman or the condition of the victim.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Smith has prior convictions of terroristic threat, aggravated battery and criminal threat.
