SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - Two people are in the hospital, one of which is in critical condition, after a crash near Newton.

Police say it happened around 7:15 p.m. on I-135 just south of Newton.

It was caused by a crate falling off the back of a truck and a car hitting it.

While deputies were investigating that crash, traffic started backing up and police say a car slammed into the back of a pickup.

The driver of the car was taken to Wesley with critical injuries. There was also a passenger who had minor injuries.

The highway was closed for a short time but has since been reopened.
