WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The Wichita City Council has unanimously approved the termination of a community improvement district anchored by the Wichita Sports Forum near K-96 and Greenwich.

Several businesses in the area, including Academy sports and Dave & Busters, collected an additional 1% sales tax to help fund the K-96 and Greenwich interchange. The tax was supposed to be in place until 2036, but those businesses collected the money needed in just seven years.

The 1% tax will end on September 30. The city said ending the tax early will save shoppers $400,000 a year.

The Wichita Business Journal reports the CID as established in 2013 in partnership with K-96 Destination Development Inc., developers of Greenwich Place shopping and dining district. Another CID encompasses Cabela's and collects 1.2% additional sales tax. It is set to expire in July 2034.
