Wichita police have arrested a 53-year-old man in connection with the stabbing death of his roommate early on Easter Sunday.

Keith Thurman was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail just before 2 p.m. Sunday for second-degree murder. He was held without bond Monday morning.

Officers responded at around 3 a.m. to the report of a stabbing in the 3400 block of East Munger, near Pawnee and Hillside. They arrived to find the victim, 62-year-old Albert Thomas, with multiple stab wounds. He died at the scene.

Capt. Brent Allred said Thomas and Thurman lived at the home with their girlfriends and were cooking for Easter when the two men began to argue. The arguments escalated to a physical altercation outside the home.

"During the altercation, Mr. Thurman stabbed Mr. Thomas multiple times, causing his fatal injuries," Capt. Allred said. "This investigation is ongoing."

Capt. Allred said one of the women, who was likely trying to break up the fight, later showed up at a local hospital with Thurman and was treated for a stab wound. That's where Thurman was taken into custody.

Thomas' death was Wichita's 9th homicide of 2019. Capt. Allred said there were 13 homicides in the city at the same time last year.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Thurman has multiple prior convictions that include aggravated assault, aggravated battery, robbery, theft and obstruction. He was last paroled in February of 2013 and his post-release expired a year later.
