A 30-year-old man who killed his ex-girlfriend at her Wichita home two years ago will have to spend nearly 29 years in prison, at least.

The Sedgwick County district attorney's office says Dane Owens was sentenced Thursday to 25 years to life for first-degree murder and 43 months for aggravated burglary. Those sentenced will run consecutively.

Owens was convicted last month of first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the October 2016 shooting death of Rowena Irani. She was found shot in the head in a home near 29th Street North and Woodlawn and died the following day.

An arrest affidavit says Owens allegedly drove to the area of Rowena's house, parking away from the home so she would not see him and call police. He walked in the unlocked front door, the handgun in a sling he wore on his right arm.

"As he walked...toward the living room he saw Rowena come around the comer from the kitchen," the document states. "He said he was 'spooked' when she came around the corner and he fired the gun and she fell to the ground."

Irani was shot at around 1 p.m. and was left without care for at least three hours before her mother found her.

She was a was a psychology major and student involvement ambassador at Wichita State University.
