Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputy Narciso Navais trains recruits to deal with violence, crime and unfortunately tragedy.

"Emotionally, we want everyone to survive this,” he said.

The death of deputy Robert Kunze is hitting the law enforcement community hard.

Narvais helps to oversee the training academy, where a big focus is put on mental health.

"We need that comradery,” he stated. “What I have seen from any incident that causes trauma is the officer’s ability to work with each other. To count on those friendships to help each other out, to make those calls, 'Hey, can we just go have a drink.' Having that additional time to appreciate the circumstances that we're in and try to move forward from where we're at."

Former Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lieutenant Lin Dehning is counting on his training to get him through this difficult time. He not only worked side by side with deputy Kunze, but the two were friends.

"I would hope that nobody would ever have to deal with this, but unfortunately this is the reality of our profession,” said Dehning.
