The Wichita City Council is considering an event that would allow people to walk on Commerce Street with alcohol during the March Madness games.

The event called "Courtside on Commerce" proposes closing Commerce Street for food and beer trucks on Thursday, March 15th, and Friday, March 17th.

The dates coincide with the NCAA first and second rounds games that will be played inside Intrust Bank Arena in downtown Wichita.

"We're just trying to enhance this event and have a good party for everybody," said Crystal McDonald, owner of Xclusive Events and alcohol provider for the event.

But, residents and business owners on Commerce Street have mixed reaction about the street closure and event.

"When people from out of the area, come and decide that they will host something on Commerce Street because they need to help Commerce Street out, I'm not too happy about that," said Marilyn Grisham, owner of The Fiber Studio.

"This is going to be great, even though we're not going to be able to do a lot of work, the awareness that we're going to be able to get out, just that, 'Hey, we exist,'" said Brett Hogan, executive director of Positive Directions.

Event organizers said there will be special access to parking for those who live and work in that area during the event.

The proposal will return to the City Council on Tuesday, February 20.
