Derby USD 260 transportation department is sponsoring two “Try-it-Out” days for people interested in experiencing driving a school bus.

The district said it is seeking to fill bus driver positions before the start of the 2024-2025 school year. The purpose of this week's event is to provide hands-on exposure to help people decide if driving a bus could be the right job for them.

Bus driver trainers will be on-site to to help candidates learning more about what driving a bus entails and will ride with bus operators. A commercial driver's license (CDL) is not required to attend or apply. The district will help obtain CDLs for those who are hired.

“Our goal is to generate interest into what driving a school bus and working in student transportation is all about,” said Randy Collins, transportation supervisor. “Our drivers will be on hand to observe anyone wanting to try driving a bus as well as answer any questions as to why we enjoy doing this very rewarding job. We will be more than happy to discuss all aspects of the job including benefits and how well this job can be part time on its own or be combined with other jobs in the district to give someone a full work week.”

“Try-it-Out” Days will be held at Derby North Middle School at 3100 Rock Road.
