WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Two bodies were pulled out of the southeast side of Lake Afton early Sunday morning after a call for help came into deputies at about 1 a.m.

Sedgwick County’s Joseph Slaughter said there were two individuals unaccounted for from the campsite at Lake Afton.  He added fire rescue came out and attempted to locate them.

"First distress call came from a person that was swimming offshore and the second victim was… going out to help rescue the individual and he also drowned as well,"  said Sedgwick County Battalion Chief Jeremy Whitney.

Whitney said rescue efforts started about 2 a.m. Sunday morning but stopped because of the storm from Saturday night.

Rescue resumed at sunrise.

"It was determined this morning it would be a recovery process, units from Sedgwick County Fire searched the area and both victims were found shortly after 11 o’clock this morning and removed from the water," added Whitney.

Sedgwick County’s Joseph Slaughter said it was two men age 35 and the other in his late twenties.

Earlier Sunday afternoon the coroner was on its way to retrieve the bodies from the lake and take them to the Forensic Science Center for autopsies.

At this time the investigation is ongoing.
