KU basketball has lost one of its returnees before the season started.

Guard Elmarko Jackson tore his patellar tendon while playing in a scrimmage Tuesday afternoon. In a statement, Head Coach Bill Self said Jackson would undergo surgery and full recovery would take 12 months.

Jackson averaged 4.3 points and 1.7 assists in his freshman season.

"We are all crushed by this," Self said. "Elmarko has had a terrific spring. He has worked so hard and improved so much. This will be a challenge that he will meet head on and he will return as good as ever."
