WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 102-year-old WWII veteran is boarding a Kansas Honor Flight on Thursday for a special trip to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy.

Olen Mitchell, of Hutchinson, served in the Army and in the European Theatre. He survived being shot in the face and received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge for his service.

The D-Day landing was on June 6, 1944. Kansas Honor Flight says Olen's free trip is put together by American Airlines. Hutchinson police, Wichita police and American Legion Post 68 escorted Olen to the airport.
