NEWTON, Kan. (KAKE) - A Newton man has been sentenced to nearly 23 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 66-year-old woman.

Le'Rhon Hamilton, 19, previously pled guilty to rape, attempted criminal sodomy, and aggravated residential burglary regarding two incidents that took place in July and August 2023. Police say a woman who was suffering from dementia reported that someone came into her home in the late evening hours of July 21 and assaulted her. She was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

During the early morning hours of August 6, an unknown individual was recorded breaking into the same woman's home. The woman was not home at the time, and the suspect left without taking any items. The woman identified the man in the video as the same one who recently attacked her.

Three days later, Hamilton was observed by police and detained. An officer noticed Hamilton's age, build and characteristics matched those of the person in the video. Additionally, Hamilton had damage to his glasses that matched those in the video, as well as tattoos that were the same in the video.

Hamilton's DNA was obtained and sent to the KBI lab for comparison, and was consistent with seminal fluid evidence collected from the victim.

In addition to his prison sentence, Hamilton will be listed as a sex offender for the rest of his life, and ordered to serve lifetime post release, where he will be monitored. Hamilton could be sent back to prison if he violates those conditions.
