GREAT BEND, Kan. (KAKE) - A 37-year-old central Kansas man was killed in a utility terrain vehicle crash over the weekend, the local sheriff says.

The Barton County Sheriff's Office was notified at around 5 p.m. Saturday of an accident near the diversion dam on the Arkansas River near Dundee, which is southwest of Great Bend. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said deputies arrived and located the driver, Wilbert Sanko, who had sustained serious head injuries.

Sanko, of Great Bend, was taken to a local hospital where he later died. His 33-year-old passenger was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The investigation indicated that a 2014 Polaris Rzr was heading east in the riverbed when it went into a skid and overturned, pinning Sanko underneath.

The accident remains under investigation.
