LAWRENCE, Kan. (KAKE) - Three people died Wednesday when a pickup truck crashed head-on into their vehicle on a northeast Kansas highway. 

It happened at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 24 north of Lawrence in Douglas County. The Kansas Highway Patrol says an eastbound GMC Sierra struck a westbound Kia Soul head-on.

The three people in the Kia were killed. The patrol identified them as 70-year-old Ronald Milano of Bennet, Nebraska, who was driving, 39-year-old Joshua Milano and 33-year-old Patricia Milano. Joshua and Patricia were from Lincoln, Nebraska. It's unclear if the three were wearing seat belts.

The 43-year-old Lawrence man driving the pickup was not hurt.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says U.S. Highway 24-59 north of Lawrence and near the Jefferson County line is closed in both directions while authorities investigate the crash. The crash occurred at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and three people died. No further details were provided. 

Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternate route for the next several hours, the sheriff's office said.
