CHANUTE, Kan. (KAKE) - One person is dead and at least 8 people are recovering after a fire in Chanute at a 3-story apartment complex on West 4th Street.

A woman had to take her young son, and her dog through a window on the top floor to escape.

Fire and smoke rose high in the air at the Cornerstone Apartment Complex. Investigators say the fire broke out around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday but Raquel Dungey didn't realize what was happening until she checked her front door.

"I opened up the front door, just a little bit. And then there's fire right there, so I ran as fast as I could to my son,” said Dungey.

After Dungey got her son, she said the flames were poking into her third-story apartment and the only path out was the window. She looked out and saw responders ready for them.

Dungey tells KAKE News she had to throw her son and dog out the window and police were able to catch them safely.

"There was straight black smoke, I was going to jump on that thing,” said Dungey.

But then first responders were able to get a ladder and Raquel was saved.

One person died in the fire and investigators are still working on a cause. Even with a story of survival it was still a somber day at this complex and a reminder of the danger when a fire breaks out.

"It's pretty sad. People have come by and people have prayed here. And sobbed,” said Wally Roberts, Chiefs of Investigation Division for State Fire Marshal.

The American Red Cross is helping survivors like Raquel Dungey. Fire investigators say the apartment building is a total loss.
